Introduction by Alva:
Merlin is a dear friend I have made over here in India. She was one of the first to greet me on my first day at NBCC and when a group of us went to lunch she guided me through the meal. Which was no small feat. ;)
She shared this poem with me born out of a Sunday teaching and Ecclesiastes 1:2. It stuck me how much in my own life had been (and probable still is) "pathetic" and how much "toil" in my own life I had wasted. It also struck me how many similarities there are between the culture here and India and the culture in the USA.
Vanity
Don't I look pretty?!
Flawless beauty, Chanel and Gucci
Make me look like a million bucks
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity!
Study hard, work harder
Whan can't you be better than your neighbor?
Set benchmarks, be a man!
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity!
What's life without money?!
Ambitious soul, I need to be the best
Power & money, politics, lies, much more money
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity!
Marry a rich, sauve guy:
She should be hot, with maybe a fat dowry:
A fairytail wedding with a thousand guests
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity!
Name our kids something unique
The best school, the best clothes
This will make us proud!
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity!
Instagram, posts, filter, tweets and pings
Who liked? Why didn't they? Refresh and check!
I need you to approve and feed my gluttonous ego
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity!
How pathetic is your life?!
You, that was made in the image of God!
So craze in your vanity, so entangled in delusion
You lose sight of who really needs to be pleased!
You toil hard, you raise empires
You collect pride in banks and properties
For waht though? Return you must to mere dust!
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity!
